Join The Herd
There are more than 200 tribes in India engaged in Pastoralism, practicing nomadism, agro-pastoralism, and transhumance existence, tending their livestock from the Deccan plateau to Alpine meadows of the Himalaya.
With various challenges in the modern era such as geopolitical boundaries, access to pastures, climate change, social stigma, low financial returns, lack of motivation in the next generation to carry forward the legacy, the pastoralist communities are at the edge of losing their identities. |
We are trying to give the dedicated platform to tell the stories of the pastoralist communities in the Himalaya. |
What We Are Trying To Do?
Under this initiative, we aim to contribute by documenting the herding practices, their tradition, challenges they are facing as well as their lifelong experiences in these harsh Himalayan landscapes and their indigenous knowledge passed on from their generations with the help of our contributors and collaborators.
With changes in climate, geographic as well as political scenarios,we aim to raise awareness of the imperative issues faced by various pastoralist communities all over the Indian Himalaya
